San Miguel de Allende: About the city

San Miguel de Allende, founded in 1542 as "San Miguel el Grande" by the friar Juan de San Miguel, became an important commercial and cultural center, and in 1826 was renamed in honor of the independence hero Ignacio Allende.

Today, San Miguel de Allende is located practically in the dead center of Mexico, "the heart," in the state of Guanajuato, about 170 miles north of Mexico City. Renowned for its Colonial charm, San Miguel's 64-block historic center was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. Twice voted by readers of Travel + Leisure as their favorite city in the world, San Miguel de Allende is a mecca for artsy and affluent expats.

Where to Eat

Quince is the “#1 Rooftop in the world.” It has a great view and a show, as well as good food. Keep in mind you are paying for the electric violinist and sparklers, so the prices will be a bit hiked.

We are personally not a fan because last time we came the customer service was horrible: we never got some drinks we ordered, everyone got the interactive sparklers except us (and I mean EVERYONE had one except us), we were very obviously ignored, so much that people would come and and go on the tables around us, and we would still be waiting to order.

Overall the staff was rude, food was good, show was fun, and prices were overpriced. It’s worth a try if you keep in mind what it really is: a tourist trap.

What to Do

Admire mariachis on the town square

Thursdays-Sundays starting at golden hour there is always mariachis playing in the town square. Take your significant other to get serenated here or just sit and listen to others request songs.

Walk around the town center

The center of San Miguel is extremely small, yet there is always something to discover. We have a few walking tours saved, so ask us to send them to you if you’re interested!
